NoiShanghai X

August 5th, 2007

It was a cool but humid night at the Live Bar in Shanghai. There were more people there for this event than I had ever experienced.

The night started quietly with Patel Pretal a duo from the UK. With dreamy live vocal samples combined with the improvised performance of random objects, it really was a great way to introduce the night.

Casse Ufficio Malattie Tropicali was next performing on some borrowed equipment from Torturing Nurse. A group from Italy studying Chinese at Fudan, some of them never having performed together before, gave a great truly improvised show. Feedback and echoes galore, their experiment was a success.

Muscle Snog, a local Shanghai band, showed their experimental side that night with an epic performance. Over 30 minutes long the songs takes you on a journey to their soul. Loud, soft, angry, and nice every human emotion was catered to. You will not believe your ears.

Torturing Nurse. BDSM. Hot wax. 2 girls. Japanese rope bondage. Need I say more?

After a short break, the final performance of the night was a combination of Torturing Nurse and Casse Ufficio Malattie Tropicali.

Needless to say everyone at the venue was left breathless.

Enjoy.

Madame P (Italy)

Madame P Website

Madame P Myspace

These 3 jewels from the beloved Madame P are a delight to listen to. Backed with simple instrumental rhythms, her complex, intimate voice is layered over itself creating a melodical and mechanical weave. Simply Beautiful.
Madame P is the latest musical incarnation of italian artist Patrizia Oliva. In the past she was a co-founder and member of the seminal all-female band Allun. She was also a member of Rosas Y Tulipanes duo along with Luca Pagani, guitarist of the alternative rock back Viclarsen.

Recently she also started collaborations with Luca Sigurta’ in the highly experimental project Macaya, and with Tommaso Rolando and Marco Ravera, guitarist and double bass player of the acclaimed jazz/fusion band Calomito, in the impro/jazzy combo Toba. A few self-released EPs and a long series of successful concerts rapidly brought her among the most promising female italian acts. Her official debut album was released in Germany by Cold Coffeine Addict in November 2005. A noisy collaboration with The Afeman, a.k.a. Andrea Marutti, was released in April 2006 on Afe Records.

Her live sets are focused on the wide range of her vocal techniques: she experiments with her voice sampling it in real time, feeding the result through various effect units along with contact microphones and other minimal electronic devices. “Spellbound”, an album recorded live in Rome, was released in the U.K. by Curor Recordings in Autumn. During 2006 Madame P has been touring through U.S.A., U.K. and The Netherlands. She is currently working on her second album which will be released later during the year.

NoiShanghai IX

June 17th, 2007

On an early quiet Sunday afternoon, a light rain blankets sleepy Shanghai. Something was brewing at the Live Bar in Shanghai. But things were not all quiet for very long- Noishanghai IX was taking place and it woke the dead.

Opening with Torturing Nurse it was just the jump in icy water that we needed for this event. As usual, TN never disappoints delivering massive walls of sound and screams.

Vavabond was next with great noise weaving in and out of a heavy waterfall of static. Teasing you with a gradual lift to the noise- the anticipation itself was torture.

Li Jian Hong is a legend, creating noise with his guitar and effects. His performance extends to his body, his contortions appearing as if an extension of his guitar. His mastery of his guitar and effects allow him to create precise and beautiful pieces.

The final act was an experimental musician from Japan- Marquido. Amidst all the sweat and blood his soft and gentle hums was perfect anti-climax for a powerful event.

Enjoy.
