Building 173

“1 building, 7 stories, 3 generations”

“A building is a volume of human history, holding within its pages the stories and secrets of generations past and present. Building 173 in downtown Shanghai has witnessed three quarters of a century of the most dramatic upheaval in modern Chinese history. Its residents tell an intimate tale of how these violent changes have altered the course of their lives.”

This unique documentary was about an apartment building in Shanghai built in the beginning of the 20th Century. The director creatively implemented ingenious 3d-like animations from scanned archived photos, and animated white outline animations- a painstaking process which involved tracing from every other frame from actual reenacted filmed footage. Bivouac was involved with the Sound Design for the animated sequences as well as the final Audio Post-production for the film. From the initial silent animations- using research and hints from other archived photos, we recreated soundscapes that were as authentic as if one were living during that era. The result is an ultra-realistic soundscape that heightens the dramatic experience of the viewer involving them at a more intimate level when viewing the film.
