‘Sounds of Shanghai’ on Unlike.net

‘Sounds of Shanghai’
is a project we began in order to bring Shanghai to the world. Where natives of Shanghai as well as visitors can hear the typical sounds of life in and around different locations of the largest city in China. Each recording featured here is what we think recreates the feeling, object, and experience of each location. The recordings are recorded on professional equipment and are best when listened to on headphones.

“No effects or additional editing are applied to the sound bites.”

By collaborating with Unlike.net- an online digital concierge and travel guide- each location is brought to life with unique and intimate recordings. By adding sound to a travel guide, it no longer is a silent 2-dimensional object, rather it transforms an informative publication into a ‘living’ novel- invoking emotion and imagination. Now, with the popularity of portable music players, one can experience Shanghai at anytime before, during, and even after their visit.

This kind of ‘Audio-travelling’ places the listener at these destinations even from thousands of miles away and is aimed to appeal to visitors or residents like myself. I compose these recordings much like a photograph, not only does technical expertise with the sound equipment come into play, but one must not ignore the splendid serendipity of just being somewhere at the right moment in time. These recordings are snapshots of the unscripted life from Shanghai that capture the people, the place, culture, and the character of Shanghai. I invite you to listen to these with headphones in order to immerse yourself within each location.
