For the past few weeks, I have been getting new recordings for the next book of Growing Up With Shanghai. Several people have contacted me because of the interview from ICS and were really interested in being a part of this project. So far I have recorded along Huai Hai Lu, the old Jewish area in Hong Kou district and yesterday (Feb 28), I recorded in the Zhen Ru Si Area of Shanghai.
Gu Yunqin grew up in the Zhen Ru Si area of Shanghai and she shares with us the memories she has of the area. She tells us that before this area was developed it was full of old houses and nong tangs and that the faux antique facades that lined the streets now were recently put up. However, the area was still quite beautiful especially in the Zhen Ru Temple where we sat for a few hours just talking.
On this walk, I was fortunate enough to be joined by Sue Anne Tay of Shanghai Street Stories (http://shanghaistreetstories.wordpress.com/) and Malcolm Moore of the UK Daily Telegraph. Sue Anne has already posted some photos on her Flicker site of the walk (http://www.flickr.com/photos/satay).
Malcolm’s write up should be on the Daily Telegraph website soon along with a video they took of the walk.
