‘Piano Tuner’
“Recorded September 19, 2009. We recently got an old piano from our in-laws. It hasn’t been touched in about 10 years. So our first step in its restoration was to get it tuned. We called an experienced piano tuner and he knew not of the huge task ahead of him. I recorded almost two hours of his tuning but I have uploaded this interesting excerpt. It begins with him climbing up the scale and ending with him accidentally breaking one of the strings. A banal scale ending with a bang.”
‘Air Raid Siren’
“Recorded September 19. 2009. On a beautiful autumn day, the sun shone and the blooming Gui Hua released their luscious scent, kids played, and air raid sirens sounded. A yearly occurence, 2008 was the first time since WWII since they had sounded city-wide.
After the sirens, you can hear our downstairs neighbors, playing the Gu Zheng, the leaves blow, construction, and the sounds of our apartment complex.”
