Recorded June 8, 2009. Waking up after the incessant scratching of my bedroom door by my cat at 5am, I decided to venture out to a road that is still under construction across from where I live. I have walked by this way many times before with my dogs and it has always sounded so full of life. I never noticed, however, until I walked through there after a heavy rainstorm. There were so many frogs in the puddles and hidden in the brush that the noise was amazing. So I promised myself to come back and record there one day. Although the completion of this road will speed up my travel time to nearby Gubei, it will truly be a shame when the road is finished.
This was recorded with a Sony PCM-D50 with mics set at 120 degrees. I chose this spot because to the right was high trees and bamboo blowing in the wind. On the left was where most of the bird sounds were coming from. The 120 degree setting really makes the recording sound very wide and gives a quite accurate image of the location. There was some people awake and walking or riding bikes past me in the distance. At around 20:00 min mark one man was rustling some bamboo in the distance, pulling one stalk out and dragging it away.
